What causes our teeth to
decay so fast?
Dental decay happens when the germs in your mouth eat the sugar you
take in to form acids
that accumulate on your
teeth. The acids literally dissolve the teeth, making the holes we call
cavities. As the holes get bigger, they
trap more germs, so the cavities continue to grow to the point where an
abscess will form if the cavity is not cleaned
out and repaired.
How do I best prevent tooth
decay?
Daily effective oral hygiene measures at home include brushing,
flossing, oral
irrigators etc., to remove bacteria, plaque and accumulating acids.
Reduction in dietary sugar to minimize the acid making potential of the
bacteria that even the best brushing and flossing might miss.
Most important, consistent and regular professional dental
examinations, cleanings and x-rays when appropriate, and increasing
your oral home care hygiene.
What should I do when I have a
wisdom tooth ache?
Wisdom teeth problems are quite common. In this part of the world, we
encounter them almost
every day.
They occur because our jaws are sometimes not big enough to accomodate
all our teeth. As a result, they usually get stuck, or impacted
part way in. In this position, they are highly prone to infection. The
only long-term
solution is to remove them.
However, the best advice we can give you is to get your wisdom teeth
checked by your dentist. This will require a visual examination and
x-rays. If the wisdom teeth are indicated for removal, your dentist
will inform you.
How often do I need dental
check-ups?
The old
rule of twice a year cleanings still applies although everyone is
different and your frequency of dental cleanings and examinations
should be determined by your dentist and hygienist based on your past
history of dental problems and the present conditions in your mouth.
Is dental treatment
expensive?
We
understand that cost is of primary concern to most patients. We strive
to provide quality dental care at reasonable cost.
